How to Apply for Karnataka's Gruha Jyoti Scheme?
Introduction:
The Karnataka Government has launched the 'Gruha Jyoti Scheme' to enhance the welfare of residents by offering free electricity within Karnataka. The scheme's main goal is to lower electricity expenses by providing up to 200 units of free power for every residential household. Additionally, existing schemes such as Kuteera Jyothi, Amrutha Jyothi, and Bhagya Jyothi are being integrated with Gruha Jyoti.
Gruha Jyoti Scheme Karnataka
This initiative aims to improve living conditions by exempting households from electricity bills if their consumption stays under 200 units monthly, saving them roughly Rs.1,000. The Energy Department expects 5 to 10 lakh applications daily through the Seva Sindhu portal, which is accessible for online registration via computers or smartphones. Alternatively, in-person registration can occur at Bangalore One, Karnataka One, or Grama One Centres. The scheme benefits 2.14 crore families consuming less than 200 units on average per month, operational from 1 August 2023, covering July usage.
For free electricity under Gruha Jyoti, residents consuming under 200 units (as per 2022-23 data) receive a zero-bill.
Calculation of Average Electricity Consumption for Gruha Jyoti Scheme
Consumers with less than 200 units average consumption in the previous year get free electricity. The calculation for a connection is:
Average electricity consumption = Average consumption from April 2022 to March 2023 + 10% increase.
Those exceeding 200 units won't benefit. For sub-200 units, all costs are covered. If exceeding the average but under 200, the bill reflects the excess units. If usage exceeds 200 units, the full bill is payable.
For example, if 'X' averages 150 units (plus 10%), equaling 165 units, they'll receive free power up to 165 units. If the monthly usage is 175 units, they owe cost for 10 units. Above 200 units require full payment.
In new homes with no consumption history, 53 units + 10% (approximately 58-59 units) free monthly power is allotted. Above 58-59 units incurs charges post the first year, their average is recalculated to allocate free units.
